Six steps
From idea to something real.
Start with the problem
Write down who has the problem, how they deal with it today, and what it costs them in time or money. If you cannot describe the problem without describing your app, stay on this step a little longer.
Talk to people before you build
Speak to ten or more people who have the problem. Ask about the last time it happened and what they did, not whether they would use your app, because almost everyone says yes to that. Look for people already spending time or money on a workaround.
Protect it sensibly
Ideas are rarely stolen; the hard part is building and selling. Most developers and investors will not sign an NDA for a first conversation, so save that for detailed plans or code. Check your name against existing UK trade marks before spending on branding. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Prove it as cheaply as possible
Try a landing page that collects sign-ups, a clickable prototype, or a first version in an AI app builder such as Lovable, Bolt or v0. A few weeks and a small subscription can tell you more than months of planning.

Hire a freelancer or an agency
Hand it over and get it built. Quality varies a lot, so have someone independent check the work as it goes.

Questions
Can I build an app with no coding experience?
Yes, a first version. AI app builders let non-technical founders build working apps. Where most people need help is making that app reliable and safe enough for paying customers.
How much does it cost to build an app in the UK?
Anything from a small monthly subscription to an AI app builder, to a significant investment for a full agency build, depending on what it needs to do. The cheapest sensible route is usually to prove the idea first, then spend on building it properly.
Do I need a technical co-founder?
Not to get started. Many founders test the idea and build a first version with senior help where they need it, then look for a co-founder once they know exactly what the business needs.
Should I ask developers to sign an NDA?
For a first conversation it is usually unnecessary, and many will decline. Once you share detailed plans, designs or code, a simple NDA or a confidentiality clause in the contract is sensible.
What if I have no money to build it?
